This is my first time participating in the monthly DSMA Blog Carnival. Each month they suggest a topic and this month it's "New Year with Diabetes: Striving for _______ in 2013!" I have two very specific goals for my diabetes management in 2013 (Katie has specific goals?! I'm shocked.). One will hopefully address the physical side of my diabetes and the other the mental health side of living with diabetes.
1) Physical Goal - Attempt pumping again
I used an insulin pump in 2002-2003, but after a year I still couldn't get past the tubing so I went back to MDIs. I still remember running down the street with some friends and my pump (which was tucked into the waistband of my jean skirt) slipped and was suddenly dangling between my legs like a creepy umbilical cord.
While I've made tremendous strides in improving my A1c over the last 6 months I can't help but wonder if going back on a pump might slice off a few more 1/10th of a point. I'm also hoping it will give me some more freedom in my day-to-day life. Right now my eye is on the new version of the OmniPod (should be available March/April 2013). I'm digging the new PDM features (i.e. now including meal boluses in their IOB calculations) and the smaller pod. Key feature: no tubing! Expect to read much more about this later in the Spring.
2) Mental Health Goal - Attend a diabetes conference
A lot of blogs talk about various diabetes conferences going on around the country. They always sound so awesome and I've been keeping my eye out for one that might work. Well, this week I think my wish came true because I found out about the "Weekend for Women Conference" being put on by DiabetesSisters. It's May 3-5, 2013 in Raleigh, NC. Not only does every single item on the agenda sound interesting to me, BUT the conference also starts 3 days after my 30th birthday. This is a big birthday for me because it's my golden and I want to do something really special to celebrate. This will be it!
This post is my January entry in the DSMA Blog Carnival. If you’d like to participate too, you can get all of the information at http://diabetessocmed.com/2013/january-dsma-blog-carnival-2/
